About HHI

The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is a university-wide academic and research center in humanitarian crisis and leadership. HHI is based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Department of Global Health and Population and is affiliated with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). As an Inter-Faculty Initiative, HHI collaborates closely with all Harvard Schools and Harvard Teaching Hospitals and is the primary humanitarian outreach arm of Harvard University. The mission of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative is to create new knowledge and advance evidence-based leadership in disasters and humanitarian crisis. HHI was founded in 2005, currently operates 20 projects in 26 countries, and consists of over 65 staff, faculty, affiliated experts, students, fellows, and collaborators. HHI’s aim is to promote interdisciplinary dialogue in pressing humanitarian issues, advance the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide, and improve the lives of communities in war, conflict, and natural disasters.

About the LMS

The recently launched HHI Learning Management System (LMS) platform provides educational support across the Harvard Humanitarian Academy educational programs. It enables self-registration and manual registration of learners in asynchronous, synchronous, and blended learning courses. The platform promotes collaborative learning and cohort development through a range of communication tools. Learners are able to access learning pathways and certificate programs that will allow them to promote community development and engagement.

About the Position

The Humanitarian Academy Program Manager, Online Learning will be responsible for overseeing the use of LMS platforms that deliver a range of educational experiences on leadership, negotiation, humanitarian principles, and other topics with global impact. The Program Manager will have the ability to manage every aspect of the HHI LMS platform, including LMS sustainability, budget, market research on future users, business development, outreach, and course promotion through social media channels. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional experienced in higher and corporate education interested in joining a high-performing team.

The Program Manager is part of the HHI operations team and works closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders such as the faculty, program staff, instructional designer, monitoring and evaluation coordinator, communications coordinator, students, teaching assistants, student interns, and collaborators at the offices of education, diversity and inclusion, finance, among others. The position jointly reports to the Director of Education and Instructional Designer.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Act as the single point of contact for ongoing LMS support and services
  • Manage LMS platforms to deliver synchronous and asynchronous courses
  • Support with online course creation and be able to manage and migrate SCORM (aware of xAPI and TIN CAN formats)
  • Reflect HHI instructional design values in LMS facilitation
  • Promote courses hosted on LMS through social media, marketing, and outreach
  • Identify new market opportunities and learner audiences
  • Manage user accounts and answer all email requests sent by LMS users to resolve login and accessibility issues
  • Ensure LMS deliverables adhere to funder-specific and region-specific privacy regulations (GDPR) when appropriate
  • Contribute to course set up and testing on LMS platform as needed
  • Troubleshoot issues with LMS, e-learning courses and take the required steps to resolve
  • Test changes to the LMS, publish and test modules, ensure accurate course creation
  • Assist program managers with enrolling new users into the LMS, ensuring that accounts are set up properly to capture user data insights
  • Develop a system to keep track of LMS data and generate user reports
  • Work with Monitoring & Evaluation Coordinator to develop ongoing evaluation systems
  • Maintain an HHI-wide view of programmatic LMS needs
  • Report monthly in HHI-wide team meetings on LMS updates and LMS-related activities
  • Coordinate with Instructional Designer and program managers to strategize marketing roadmap
  • Communicate system issues with faculty, staff, Instructional Designer, and LMS vendor
  • Use learner insights to reshape LMS vision and direction of future courses
  • Build upon LMS vision to generate social media campaigns that increase student access
  • Post regularly on social media to generate awareness for paid programming offered through the LMS, meeting targets, and reaching key performance indicators

Location: The primary work location for this position is the HHI office on 14 Story Street, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to be determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the organization and this position return to an operational status that supports it.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree required

Years of Experience

  • 5+ post-graduate years of relevant experience in learning management systems, project management, grant management, and training programs; a combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong project management and marketing/communications skills required

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Education, Business Administration, Marketing, or relevant field
  • 3 or more years of managing staff
  • Experience working in an academic setting

Technical & Soft Skills

  • Management of LMS
  • Ability to develop new technical skills quickly
  • Exhibit high customer service skills, be responsive, and demonstrate a proactive attitude
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Online course creation and SCORM (xAPI and TIN CAN formats)
  • Other LMS-related software to enhance the virtual classroom experience
